Obituary

Harold (Harry) D. Krakenberg, 83, of Hickory Ridge Rd. Catskill, NY died Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, NY.  Born December 25, 1938 in Astoria, Queens he was the son of the late Harold and Elizabeth Krakenberg.   He attended New York City public schools graduating in 1957  from Brooklyn Automotive High School.    Under the guidance of his father he learned the trade of auto mechanics working in his father’s business, Federal Automotive in Astoria, from an early age.    After moving to the Hudson Valley in the 1970s, Harry continued working with his hands as a carpenter and eventually as a builder of custom homes operating under his own business, Northeast Carpentry and later, Hickory Ridge Builders.    He  leaves behind many beautiful custom homes reflecting his skill and artisan craftsmanship.    Many young men learned the skills of carpentry and homebuilding under Harry’s tutelage and guidance.

A Formula 4 race car enthusiast, he raced at Lyme Rock, Watkins Glen and in New Hampshire.  He belonged to the SCCA Race Car Drivers Association and appreciated the skill of racing and the thrill of speed.   He dabbled in creative and expressive photography, grew garlic and created a landscaped pond and idyllic space where his wife Sara’s ashes are buried, and where his remains will also rest.

Sober over 33 years, Harold was devoted to and believed in the principles of AA and the 12 step-program where sharing and caring for people was of the utmost importance.  Harry cared for and supported many people in the Woodstock rooms.  He was constantly learning from his colleagues in the Program and they in turn learned from him.     He was known for his willingness to help people especially beginners caught in the struggle for sobriety.

His devotion to his family was central to his life.    He raised his son,   Paris Che, his two grandchildren Paris K.  and Aiden Che, as well as his step daughter Ann David of Monroe. He also leaves two sisters,  Nancy E.K. Schaef of Saugerties and Susan C. Robertson of Mt. Tremper and  brother-in-law, Rev. Finley Schaef.  A niece Heather Roberts and nephew Brian A. Robertson also survive.  He was predeceased by a nephew, Mark Curry and also by his beloved wife, Sara Miot Krakenberg.
