Ramona Fradon Obituary

Ramona Fradon, comic book illustrator, wonderful friend and mother passed away on Saturday February 24th, 2024 at the age of 97.

Ramona was born in Chicago, Illinois to Peter Dom and Erma Haefeli on Oct 2nd, 1926. She was married to New Yorker Cartoonist Dana Fradon who passed away in 2019.

Ramona is well-known for her work in the Comic industry and was one of the two first women to break the glass ceiling and become a commercial comic illustrator with comic book giants DC and Marvel Comics. She was born to draw and found comfort and joy in it until the very last days of her life. Ramona was an avid reader and loved to study history, politics and mystical religions. She published a book with Inner Traditions titled the Gnostic Faustus unveiling what she believed was a secret code for keeping the Gnostic myth alive during the transition to Christianity after Jesus died. She was a serious homebody who poured all of her creative talents mixed with her fascination with mysticism into the decor of her home. Her home and garden were always magical places to visit.

Her friends loved her for her unique gift of listening and asking questions of them that made them feel so seen and loved. She gave undying, immense love to her daughter, Amy, and was living with her and her husband for the last 9 years where she continued to draw commissions for Catskill Comics and projects for DC Comics always striving to perfect her craft. A Depression baby, Ramona still had tears when she saw a picture of Franklin Roosevelt and she cared deeply about America and about voting. She saw miracles in the smallest of things and dearly loved her dog, Charlie. She will be deeply missed by so many.

Ramona is survived by her daughter, Amy, who loves her and misses her so very much.
