Stanley Harry Bryer, 99, of Woodstock, NY, died peacefully at home on May 26, 2024. While a gentle breeze blew through open windows of spring and Mozart played softly, he was held in love and comfort by his granddaughter and others closest to him. Stanley was born on April 21, 1925 to Harry Bryer and Dorothy Uffner in Brooklyn, NY and went on to live a long and remarkable life of sacrifice, service, and adventure. Stanley was known to be both discerning and quick witted, a skilled negotiator, a true friend of the earth with a love of the outdoors (especially fly fishing) and strong advocacy for preserving nature.
Stanley bravely served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the Pacific at just 18 years old. After his service he pursued higher education at Cornell University with a degree in engineering and later from New York University in environmental law.
While Stanley’s long successful career as an environmental lawyer was marked by dedication and passion for green causes, he was forever grateful for his time at Cornell and went on to donate the fruits of his labor to the engineering program, sponsoring scholarships and professorships. Though Stanley wouldn’t have mentioned it, his philanthropy reached many humanitarian and environmental efforts.
Stanley was predeceased by beloved wife of 42 years, Gloria Bryer, next to whom he will lie to rest at the Woodstock Cemetery. He was predeceased as well by his brother Morton Bryer and by his second once in a lifetime love, Patricia Muller. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Amante of Malverne, NY, his granddaughter, Ashley Chizzoniti of Merrick, NY, two great grandchildren, his nephew Steven Kahn of Port Washington, NY as well as many friends who cherished his legacy.
A small graveside burial service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 11:30 am at the Woodstock Cemetery, 22 Rock City Rd, Woodstock, NY 12498. Arrangements are under the direction of the Seamon – Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. Of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties will be assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please donate to an environmental cause of your choosing.
